NIPUN stands for National Initiative for Proficiency in Reading with Understanding and Numeracy. The scheme was started for all the children who, by Grade 3, can have an enabling environment where the kid achieves desired learning competencies in numeracy, writing and reading.

Foundational Literacy and Numeracy (FLN) refers to basic skills in reading, writing, and mathematics. It is the ability to read and understand a basic text write and perform simple mathematical operations. The National Education Policy 2020 states that “Our highest priority must be to achieve universal foundational literacy and numeracy (FLN) in primary school and beyond by 2025.
